“But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.”
Luke 21:34 ESV

Jesus’ admonition for His disciples is important for us today.

Prepare for Battle

Prepare for Battle

We are locked in battle with being more powerful and knowledgeable than we.  Their experience is many lifetimes longer than ours and yet it is through the power of Jesus’ name and His Holy Spirit that we fight.  We encourage one another with testimony, telling of what He promises and how He delivers.  It is through prayer and walking in the Spirit that we endure and work for His kingdom.

Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
and give no opportunity to the devil.
Ephesians 4:26 – 27 ESV

Fighting in Anger

Our church is studying what it means to be members of the church.  Recent lessons are on unity within the church and building one another up.  As I read the passage above I was struck by Paul’s command five verses later:

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
Ephesians 4:31 ESV

My mind understands manhood backwards. I’ve grown older thinking much of what I saw around me as “manly” was the definition of “being a man.” It isn’t necessarily.

Jehovah, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, defines the characteristics and behaviors of men and His definition is unchanged in the face of my predecessors’ or my contemporaries’ thoughts, feelings on the matter or choices.

God gives examples of courage and steadfastness in Daniel as he went into the lions den or when Hananiah (Shadrach), Mishael (Meshach) & Azariah (Abednego) were thrown into the fiery furnace in Babylon.

During the “Sermon on the Mount,” Jesus told His followers to

“… let your light shine before men in such a way that they will see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

Later in that same sermon He tells his followers to

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them ….” Matthew 6:1

An apparent contradiction comes from misunderstanding what Jesus meant about letting “your light shine before men ….”
